CTTV’s Green Business Reporter speaks with John West, the Managing Director of Bio-Gill.

Bio-Gill is an advanced waste water system, developed by the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) in 2007. Bio-Gill was formed when ANSTO secured an agreement with the Australian Government to commercialise the advanced technology.

West defines Bio-Gill technology as “above ground bio-reactors”. He explains that there is a world wide market and practically “no limitations” to the applications of this type of technology.

West also references the main areas of demand for Bio-Gill, including industrial waste, sewage, breweries, wineries and dairies, as well as island resorts, where water waste management is essential.

The interview also explores the economic drivers for the technology. West highlights that Australia has beneficial regulations, where the government is encouraging this type of innovation and implementation. “We are filling a void” for people that are trying to do the right thing.

Mike Zimmerman the CEO of BuildingIQ speaks to CTTV’s Green Business Reporter, Giles Parkinson.

Zimmerman explains that BuildingIQ is a software company that deploys technology to optimise energy use in commercial buildings. He explains that ” at the end of the day we are trying to reduce energy consumption and cost for building owners and building managers.”

In the interview Zimmerman details Australia’s sophistication as a global market economy in terms of building energy management. He explains that Australia is the first place to deploy the company’s product. The results in Australia will then be utilised to promote and produce BuildingIQ’s product in the U.S.

Zimmerman ends by detailing how the company is bringing its “software service business model” to the property industry.

He concludes that “if you don’t have capital, or the resources to help proactively manage energy, it is absolutely ideal” for property and business owners.

Our Green Business Reporter, Giles Parkinson, asks Larry about his role as the “Solar PV Ambassador for the United States” and what he thinks of the current global climate for PV and the solar industry at large.

When Giles asks Larry about why he is attending this year’s AuSES Solar2010 Conference, Larry talks about his great respect for the Australian solar industry as one of the world leaders in PV and solar thermal energy and his high hopes for the role solar will play in both countries as a significant provider of energy in the years to come. His purpose in coming out here is to further explore new solar partnerships and strengthen those already in place between Australia and the United States.

Larry also talks about the exciting developments of his work in Iraq where newly installed solar power is bringing much needed relief and support to the citizens there to power schools, hospitals and even to provide street lighting in Bagdad as well as installing new PV solar systems in rural areas too.

Lawrence Kazmerski
Executive Director of National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)

Lawrence L. Kazmerski is Executive Director, Science and Technology Partnerships at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Golden, Colorado—having served as Director of the National Center for Photovoltaics for the period 1999-2008. He received his B.S.E.E. in 1967, M.S.E.E. in 1968, and his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 1970—all from the University of Notre Dame. He served in a postdoctoral position with the Atomic Energy Commission at the Notre Dame Radiation Research Laboratory, January through August 1971. He was on the electrical engineering faculty of the University of Maine before coming to SERI (NREL) in 1977. His research at Maine included NSF- and ERDA-funded work in thin-film photovoltaics and the report of the first thin-film copper-indium-diselenide (CIS) solar cell. He was SERI’s (NREL’s) first staff member in photovoltaics, hired specifically to establish efforts in the characterization of photovoltaic materials and devices; he led NREL efforts in measurements and characterization for more than 20 years. Kazmerski has more than 320 publications and some 200 invited talks. His current research interests include the DOE Office of Science Energy Frontiers Research Center (EFRC) at NREL dealing with “materials by design” (www.centerforinversedesign.org), for which he serves as Co-Director and Project Integrator, and solar projects ranging from the rebuilding of the electricity infrastructure in Iraq through mitigating dust problems for PV collectors. He has been recognized with several national and international awards, including the World PV Prize, the IEEE William R. Cherry Award, the AVS Peter Mark Memorial Award, and the ASES Charles Greeley Abbot Award. He is a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of the APS, and a Fellow of the AVS. Kazmerski is a member of the National Academy of Engineering.

About NREL

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is America’s primary national laboratory for renewable energy and energy efficiency research and development (R&D).

NREL’s mission and strategy are focused on advancing the U.S. Department of Energy’s and our nation’s energy goals. The laboratory’s scientists and researchers support critical market objectives to accelerate research from scientific innovations to market-viable alternative energy solutions. At the core of this strategic direction are NREL’s research and technology development competencies. These areas span from understanding renewable resources for energy, to the conversion of these resources to renewable electricity and fuels, and ultimately to the use of renewable electricity and fuels in homes, commercial buildings, and vehicles. The laboratory thereby directly contributes to our nation’s goal for finding new renewable ways to power our homes, businesses, and cars.
