In the lead-up to the event, CTTV’s Green Business Reporter, Giles Parkinson spoke to Bob Dixon, the Sr. Vice President, Global Head of Efficiency and Sustainability of Siemens. Dixon, who is also a guest speaker at the forum, comments on the new technologies being considered for the future, identifying the industry’s current climate as “the best of times.” The interview explores the newest trends in solar and wind technologies that are being developed and utilised in the “integral designs of contemporary buildings.”

Dixon draws attention to the idea of energy security, i.e the dependability that governments and companies have on energy storage, highlighting Australia’s recent natural disasters as an example.

“Buildings consume 40% of the world’s energy and contribute to 21% of the world’s greenhouse gasses,” Dixson stresses. He acknowledges the great economical opportunities currently available and believes we have the potential “to make an impact now.”

Bob Dixon will be speaking in Sydney about new technologies which can be employed into existing buildings. Some of these technologies include solar, wind, energy storage and onsite generation, and are ultimately, environmentally sustainable and efficient.

In the lead up to the event, CTTV’s Green Business Reporter, Giles Parkinson spoke to Michael Walsh, the Head of Strategy and Development at Hunter Hall Investment Management Limited, and a speaker at the conference.

Michael discusses how, despite the Global Financial Crisis (GFC), “Australia is relatively well positioned as a hub for cleantech investment”.

He also reiterates the view of many leading commentators that “Australia is a great place to generate renewable energy”.

He does concede however, that from a regulatory and financial point of view we do have uncertainty.

Michael goes on to explain how clean investment fits in with Hunter Hall’s global investment strategy.

The interview also includes a discussion about the difficulties the cleantech industry faces when fossil fuels such as coal appear to be a cheap and easy alternative. Michael believes that for the prospects of clean energy to improve in Australia, we need a price on carbon.

Michael Walsh will be speaking on the ‘Fund Manager Panel’ and will be participating in the interactive session, ‘Hypothetical Scenarios’ at the 7th Annual Australasian Cleantech Forum.

Mina explains how Peony Capital has been working with China to reduce its’ emphasis on greenhouse gas emissions.

She also talks to Giles about the difficulties of becoming more ecologically sustainable in the face of rapid urbanisation.

Mina emphasises the immense growth and change China is continuing to experience. A new coal-fired power station is being added every week, yet their aims for reductions in emissions are high.

The interview reveals how Australian companies are missing out on business opportunities in the “greening of China’s economy”.

Mina will be speaking at the 7th Annual Australasian Cleantech forum. She has witnessed the ongoing “substantial green revolution in China” and stresses that we need to “take advantage of this opportunity now”.

Mina concludes that we need to “act smart and act now”.

Solar Thermal Expert, Founder of Ausra (now owned by Areva) and Guest Speaker at AuSES Solar2010 Conference

David Mills was born in Canada and lives in Sydney, Australia. He is known worldwide for pioneering Compact Linear Fresnel Reflector (CLFR) technology in the early 1990’s and for many publications in non-imaging optics, solar thermal energy, concentrating PV , and solar energy policy since 1977.  He rose to become the head of the solar energy group at the University of Sydney School of Physics, and originated the research  programme that developed the double cermet evacuated tube absorber surface used by tens of millions of households in China.

He  is a former president of the International Solar Energy Society (ISES) and was the inaugural Chair of the International Solar Cities Initiative (ISCI).  Mills was a co-founder of Solsearch, the company that first performed research on the CLFR, co-founder of Solar Heat and Power (SHP) that built the Liddell solar array, Australia’s largest solar thermal plant, and the first CSIRO tower heliostat field.  He was subsequently co-founder of Ausra Inc. In California, which built Kimberlina,  the first commercial solar thermal electricity plant in that State in 20 years.   At Ausra in Palo Alto,  he served as first Board Chairman and led long term research in his capacity as CSO, working on advanced solar collector and thermal storage systems which continue under long term development.  Ausra’s subsidiary Ausra Pty Ltd. (formerly SHP, and now Areva Pty. Ltd.) successfully bid for the 44 MW Kogan Creek plant to be operated by CS Energy.  After Ausra was successfully sold to Areva in early 2010,  he retired in June and returned to Australia in August.

In 2009, he became the first Veski Entrepreneur in Residence, and delivered the Deakin Lecture in October. During this time he was honored by dinners with the State Governor and the Executive Staff of the University of Melbourne.  He is married to Karina Kelly, a well-known former TV science reporter and newsreader from Australia, and they have two sons aged 18 and 13.
