As the oil spill and it’s damage spreads and BP scrambles to plug the nightmare, Obama takes action and steps up pressure for Senate to pass the Clean Energy Bill:
“I will make the case for a clean energy future wherever I can, and I will work with anyone from either party to get this done.”
The House has passed an energy bill already but legislation has stalled in the Senate.
Obama plans to reiterate that the U.S. Gulf oil disaster, where a deep-water well is spitting roughly half a million gallons of crude daily off the Louisiana coast, shows the pitfalls of the nation’s reliance on traditional energy sources.
“We have to acknowledge that there are inherent risks to drilling four miles beneath the surface of the Earth–risks that are bound to increase the harder oil extraction becomes,” Obama plans to say. He plans to add, “The time has come, once and for all, for this nation to fully embrace a clean energy future.”

To put this disaster in perspective, have a look at this map showing the area this oil spill would cover if you put your own home in the hotspot. We got this tip from the article posted on news.com.au “Putting the BP oil spill disaster into perspective” by Technology Reporter, Andrew Ramadge. The map is provided courtesy of “If it was my home“. Here’s a quote from Andrew’s article:
FINDING it hard to picture just how massive the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is? Try placing it on top of your house.
Web developer Andy Lintner has created an online tool that shows you what the spill would look like in your backyard.
The mash-up, at www.ifitwasmyhome.com, uses data from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association to create an image of the oil spill.
